End of unit training phase exercise of the Air Force in Rovaniemi
Lapland Air Wing will stage the final exercise of the Air Force’s unit training phase (JPH2/25) on 20-29 November in Rovaniemi.
The main objective of the exercise is to train Air Force conscripts, reservists and personnel in their wartime tasks as part of their wartime composition and demonstrate the training level of the conscripts transferring to the reserve in December.
The exercise will be commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Timo Korpela.
Personnel from all Air Force units and the Jaeger, Karelia and Pori Brigades will participate in the exercise. The total strength of the exercise troops will be approximately 1 100 including conscripts and reservists.
F/A-18 Hornet fighter operations from Rovaniemi Air Base will be seen in the exercise on 24-27 November 2025. Flight activities will end daily by 10 pm on 24-27 November and by 5 pm on 27 November. The flights will be directed to the area between Ivalo and Kajaani. The fighters participating in the exercise will use chaff and flares that may be seen as momentary bright spots of light in the sky and cause echoes on weather radar.
The exercise troops will arrive in Rovaniemi in a dispersed motor march via different routes on 19-20 November. The return march traffic will be heaviest on 28-29 November. The vehicles may slow traffic down, especially in the nearby areas of Rovaniemi. Large numbers of military vehicles and exercise troops’ movement in the vicinity of Rovaniemi Air Base during the exercise may temporarily obstruct traffic.
Persons moving in the exercise area (see map) are requested to be prepared for unusual traffic arrangements and proof of identity.
The administrative decision on the enlargement and movement restriction of the exercise areas was made on 23 September 2025. The decision has been published as a general notice on the Puolustusvoimat.fi website.
