Supporting air operations, research and development
The air wing supports air force combat capability by executing various supporting air missions, undertaking research and development, and maintaining continued availability of air bases across southern Finland for air operations.
Satakunta Air Wing also conducts a wide range of air movement and other supporting missions in support of the entire Defence Forces, crisis management operations, the nation's high leadership, and other authorities.
Development of air warfare tactics and doctrines is an integral part of the air wing's mission, done in close partnership with universities and technology industries. Flight testing has a pivotal role in the development and fielding of new systems for Air Force and Army's aircraft.
The air wing is also tasked with protecting military installations and locations across the Pirkanmaa region on a 24/7 basis.
The air wing trains conscripts and reservists for a multitude of tasks and supports voluntary national defense training.
Organization of Satakunta Air Wing
The organization of Satakunta Air Wing consists of a Supporting Air Operations Squadron, Air Combat Centre, and Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, and a headquarters, Logistics Flight, Communications Flight, and Force Protection Squadron.
The Commander of Satakunta Air Wing is Colonel Markus Leivo.
