National Parade of the Flag Day of the Finnish Defence Forces will affect traffic arrangements on Jyväskylä on the 3–4 June

The national parade on the Flag Day of the Finnish Defence Forces to be held on 4 June 2023 will contribute to changes concerning traffic, parking, and public transportation in the city centre, Mäki-Matti and Harju areas.

The parade arrangements will start on 3 June. The main part of the parade troops, vehicles and equipment will arrive in Jyväskylä on Saturday, 3 June during the morning and afternoon. The troops will leave Jyväskylä on Sunday, 4 June after the event.

Due to the parade and practice, streets have to be closed in the city centre, Mäki-Matti and Harju areas. Residents are kindly asked to take the closing times into account when planning their movement. 

At event locations, for sustained public and march detachment safety and due to event arrangements, streets will be closed off from vehicle traffic, and parking restrictions will apply in the area. Closed streets are completely closed off from vehicle traffic. For pedestrians, the restrictions vary depending on the street. Military police and the police will monitor traffic in the area.

The pass in review closes the streets

Pitkäkatu will be closed off from traffic due to parade practice on Saturday, 3 June between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. and between 5:30 pm. and 6:30 p.m. between Oikokatu and Tanhuantie. Walking and cycling will be enabled throughout the practice.

There will be short interruptions of around 5–10 minutes on Ahdinkatu and Oikokatu as the troops move from Hippos to Pitkäkatu.
Puistokatu will be closed off from traffic between Tellervonkatu and Tourukatu on Sunday, June 4 from 9 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. during the laying of the wreath at the old cemetery. This will not apply to pedestrians. 

There will be short interruptions on Keskikatu and Viitaniementie on the footpaths and bike lanes on Sunday, 4 June from 12 p.m. to 12:30 p.m. In addition, there will be short interruptions on Sunday, 4 June from 12 p.m. to 12:30 p.m. as the parade detachments advance from Hippos to Harjukatu and Kansakoulukatu via Harju and Viitaniemi. Motorized parade detachments will advance from Hippos to Harjukatu via Keskikatu-Viitaniementie-Sepänkatu. The dismounted marching detachments will advance from Hippos via Ahdinkatu–Oikokatu–Pitkäkatu–Ihantolantie–Tapionkatu–Kansakoulukatu. 

Harjukatu will be closed off from traffic due to the parade on Sunday, 4 June from 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Yliopistonkatu and Kansakoulukatu will be closed off from traffic due to the parade on Sunday, 4 June from 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. The pass in review on Yliopistonkatu starts at 1:15 p.m. The review site for the pass will be in front of Harju stairs. During the parade, it will not be possible to cross Yliopistonkatu. The Piippuhylly parking lot, located along Yliopistonkatu between Harju stairs and Harjukatu, will be closed off from the public.

Pedestrians are kindly asked to use footpaths on Harjukatu and Kansakoulukatu on Sunday, 4 June. Vehicle traffic to residential buildings across Kansakoulukatu will be enabled along Sammonkatu.

The footpaths on the Harju side of Yliopistonkatu will be closed at the Harju stairs from 9:00 a.m. June 3 to 9:00 p.m. on 4 June.

The footpaths on the city centre side of Yliopistonkatu will be closed from 9:00 a.m. June 3 to 12:30 p.m on 4 June. On Sunday, 4 June from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. the footpaths will be open, as well as the bike lane. The lane will be closed again between 2 p.m. and 9 p.m. The public is kindly asked to take bypasses. 

The parade detachments leave Yliopistonkatu via Voionmaankatu towards Hippos. This will cause a traffic stop on Voionmaankatu from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.

Traffic arrangements in the Lutakko area

The equipment field is to be held in Lutakonaukio on June 4 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The assembling of the exhibition will begin on June 3 at 9 a.m. and is restricted from traffic. The equipment will arrive via Uno Savola street. The equipment field will also be disassembled along the same route. The equipment field will be dismantled on June 4 from 4 p.m. onwards. During the assembly and disassembly, there may be short interruptions on Uno Savola street.

Lutakonaukio's taxi station will move to the Piippukatu turning point for the duration of the event.

Restrictions on parking

The city of Jyväskylä limits parking in the area. Parking restrictions come into effect by area from June 2 onwards. The public is is kindly asked to move on foot or by public transport during the parade events.

Between Kirkkopuisto and the city administration block there is a construction site for. Because of this, parts of Vapaudenkatu, Gummeruksenkatu and Kilpisenkatu near the city hall and the city theater are closed off from traffic.

For those arriving by car, it is important to take into account the parking regulations and restrictions in force in the centre of Jyväskylä and in many residential areas. In the no-parking area, one can only park in parking spaces marked with a blue-based P sign. It is also worth remembering the off-road parking ban on park and forest areas and wastelands.

Changes to public transport

The closing of the streets during the parade will affect local bus routes. The changes will be announced on the public transport website of the Jyväskylä region closer to the event.
